Mendelssohn's Serious Variations =l
So for Felix's 54th Opus he decided to do a Theme and Variation on a religous chorale. He popped out a 10 minute piece in d minor that, in my opinion, is his very best work. I mean in his piano repertoire the only other thing that comes close is his opus 28 Fantasy or Scottish Sonata (F# Minor). Now if you are looking at his organ works his first organ sonata eclipes the sun. It would easily put out the fire of the Serious Variations. Anyways, Felix does a great job in slowly complicating the theme. At times it sounds like Bach due to its highly contrapuntal nature. It also has a few Beethoven and Schumann moments. Overall, it does it for me. I consider it a small but potent masterpiece which is Mendelssohns only REAL punch in his repertoire. The fantasy is more like a hard slap.
